Writing has begun, ladies and gentleman. My first excerpt of Patchwork Hearts is up on Google Docs, and my word count is already at 4,018. This is going to be a big month!
The first chapter was a piece that I had bouncing around in my head ever since this story started formulating back in February, in particular its opening line “Phineas reached into his chest, and pulled out his heart.” Definitely a grabber.
The first chapter are several vignettes of the main characters going about their normal business that will inadvertently set the story in motion. Some of them aren’t particularly normal, though; Phineas placing a diamond on his heart isn’t the most normal thing he could be doing, neither is Dirk being interrogated by a fierce crime lord.
One particular change I’ve made from my plans is that, at the beginning, Virgil is shown sane… kind of a jerk, but sane. He buys the watch that will eventually drive him to madness when it breaks apart, but at the time it seems like a good idea. It gives his personality shift more of a sense of startling immediacy if he wasn’t like that to start with.
Well, those are my thoughts on the initial writing of this book; tune in tomorrow for another excerpt and another entry!

Hi John
I’d love to read Patchwork Hearts as it happens. So far it sounds great.
